Helping this generation discover their next step!
As independent, Baptist pastors in the Pacific Northwest we have the opportunity this fall to attend Heartland Baptist Bible College and challenge the students to consider the great need of this area of our nation. The following information could be of use if you plan on attending the Up-Close week…and if you can’t come please pray for the week as we challenge the students to discover their next step for life, for ministry, and for God.
Basic Information
when: Tuesday – Thursday, October 22-24 (we generally use the Monday before and Friday/Saturday after for travel days)
where: Heartland Baptist Bible College, Oklahoma City, OK
cost: you will be responsible for all of your costs including, but not limited to, airfare/travel, lodging, meals (outside of what meals you may eat in the HBBC Cafe)
class involvement: more on this below, but generally we will be attending different classes throughout the mornings
chapel: this year we will have the privilege of attending HBBC for Up-Close week during a special Chancellor Chapel week, with Bro Sam Davison speaking at both chapels (Tuesday & Thursday) and a special chapel on Wednesday also. Personally, I am looking forward to hearing Bro Sam preach three times that week.
Travel & Lodging Information
Travel
We all have our own preference…some like to fly, others like to drive…personally, I would love to take a submarine, but, well, we’re headed to OKC, so that’s not very feasible.
That being said, if you didn’t know, Alaska Airlines does offer non-stop flights between Seattle and OKC, which is what I generally use.
If you happen on a great deal, share it with the others that are planning on attending (that list coming soon via email), or send it to me and I’ll send it out.
Lodging
Just as with travel, so we have our preferences for lodging. AirBNB is a good start, as is the Holiday Inn Express on Meridian, just south of the school.
Again, if you have a source for lodging that you’re willing to share, send it via email and we’ll make sure everyone has access to it.
Class & Student Involvement
Since this week revolves around our connecting with the students, one of the highlights of the week is our time in class with them. We will be provided a schedule of classes that are expecting our attendance, and our general practice is:
– attend the class as a group (this will allow multiple faces and multiple responses to questions asked)
– usually during each class a different pastor will start out the session, introducing us, why we are there, and then, if time allows, opening up for questions
– OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE is to help them Discover The Next Step (for life, for ministry, for God) which might not necessarily involve Washington, but by opening ourselves up to the students and connecting with them we might be able to befriend them and be an encouragement to them as they progress through the ministry. In other words, it’s about investing in the students – so be ready to spend some time with them now…so that we can spend time with them in the future.
Tuesday PM Question & Answer Time
On Tuesday evening at 7pm we will meet with the student body for a Question & Answer session – I’ll know the room we’ll meet in later, but most likely it will be Cafe 303. This will be mc’d by Bro Rocky Harrill with pre-determined questions that each of us will have an opportunity to answer, as well as – should time allow – the ability to take questions from the floor. In the past we have provided donuts (all attending churches that can are welcome to chip in some dough for the dough). This is an informal setting (no class dress required).
